Sturmer Hall Community Initiatives

Located within the Sturmer Hall Estate, in the village of Sturmer Essex, our estate looks to play an important part in the life of the local community. Situated next door to the beautiful and historic St Mary’s Church, Sturmer. As its closest neighbours Sturmer Hall, and its owners, work tirelessly to help preserve this important Grade 1 building.

Our facilities are available to hire at very attractive rates to Sturmer village residents and local groups, as well as a growing list of non-profit organisations providing vital support to our friends and neighbours, both locally and across the region. However, it is our series of ‘Men’s Sheds’ that we are very keen to support and see grow even in these COVID troubled years.

As a member of the UK Men’s Shed Association, Sturmer Hall Community Initiatives Programme, takes great pride in being able to host a wide variety of classes and workshops aimed at helping men of all ages enjoy life to the full, as well as providing a facility where men learn better to cope after bereavement, retirement. etc.

All the stuff we do!

Its quite amazing really…

Its no secret, we do rather a lot in our calendar year. From working with wood to working with metal. We have Art classes, Tap Dancing lessons. Jazz Jam sessions, Carp fishing, Board Games Sessions, Singing Classes, Music lessons, Hiking, Walking, Strolling, Yoga, Talking, Drinking Tea, visiting a new Micro-Brewery, we do it all. Sturmer & District Men’s Shed is a special place for special people who enjoy each others company and get a real kick out of of being with like-minded people, who have found a new reason to live. We think you’ll love what we do!

Why we do it!

Because we can …

The thing about Men is we like to do things, we like. We know its good to experiment, we never stop having the desire to learn new tricks, new trades and new ways of thinking. Life prays tricks on so many of us. getting together with other men gives us the opportunity to listen, to talk and occasionally the opportunity to debate the stuff that we find important. In a funny sort of way, the real reason we do it is because joining our Men’s Shed gives you a voice.

Getting Involved.

Because we can …

From Walking Football to a game of Dominoes or Chess, From joining our Choir, to going on Outings to interested places. Our Shed is your shed and we find ways to ensure you are involved as much as want, or as little as you want. Like it and you can do it again , not so sure then try something new among the long list of options open to you. Sturmer & District Men’s Shed is a special place where you are welcome to get involved, whatever your level of skill. We are more interested in you as a fellow ‘Shedder’ , than as a sporting superstar. You being one of us is very important!

Can Women be Members?
No, not as yet! We are thinking about it, But as things stand we think women wouldn’t really like what we do. Sturmer & District Men’s Shed is still a wee bit quirky, a place for men to escape too, to relax in, and a place to reconnect with a ‘Man’s World’ where men can be men, in a way that only men truly understand.
Are Women Welcome?
Certainly,. But not always. Some ‘Shedders’ look forward to a wee break, in much the same way as some women enjoy getting their man out from under their feet. Sturmer & District Men’s Shed has a programme that welcomes women to events that we hope women and men will enjoy together, at certain times of year.
Who Helps Who?
We aim to work to help each other. Many of our ‘Shedders’ began as a lost soul. Some stay that way, others have become Volunteers and Leaders, sparking new groups into life. For us life is a garden, We plant ideas, we nurture ambition and we help our fellow dreamers achieve, and together we manage to achieve really quite startling results.
How to Join?
Drop in for a chat. Honestly, ‘Seeing is believing, We are not a cult, or some weirdo group. We are normal guys with open minds and open hearts, ready and willing to welcome you to our wonderful world of ‘Shedding’, where nothing stops us meeting and enjoying life to the full,
